Rural Mobile Banking (RMB) with Table Banking
Solidarity House Communications, a constituent of the Solidarity House CBO undertaking training in table banking in Meru and Tharaka-Nithi Counties, has been providing mobile banking services to the members of the table banking groups in Meru County for one year now. Airtel Kenya Networks Limited, Equity Bank, and the Kenya Commercial Banks (KCB) are its current principal partners. Plans are underway to introduce the service in Tharaka-Nithi County, where Solidarity House CBO is also mobilizing and training table banking groups.
Solidarity House Communications’ one year experience has it that the project is feasible and doable; especially now that table banking groups have created a sizeable amount of wealth that requires proper management and security (More than KES 70 million was created by table bankers in Meru and Tharaka-Nithi Counties in 2013—and still growing at a rate of up to 10% per month). Again, the project will go a long way in creating the much needed jobs to particularly the idle youths in rural areas, thereby integrating technology toward poverty eradication.
